Travel the Holidays with Audiobooks: Featuring Jessica Park

Ho Ho Ho...we're on the road for the holidays with audiobooks!

This event will run until December 31. This week we're featuring:
Jessica Park

FLAT OUT LOVE by Jessica Park

Mature YA Contemporary Romance

Something is seriously off in the Watkins home. And Julie Seagle, college freshman, small-town Ohio transplant, and the newest resident of this Boston house, is determined to get to the bottom of it. When Julie's off-campus housing falls through, her mother's old college roommate, Erin Watkins, invites her to move in. The parents, Erin and Roger, are welcoming, but emotionally distant and academically driven to eccentric extremes. The middle child, Matt, is an MIT tech geek with a sweet side ... and the social skills of a spool of USB cable. The youngest, Celeste, is a frighteningly bright but freakishly fastidious 13-year-old who hauls around a life-sized cardboard cutout of her oldest brother almost everywhere she goes.

And there's that oldest brother, Finn: funny, gorgeous, smart, sensitive, almost emotionally available. Geographically? Definitely unavailable. That's because Finn is traveling the world and surfacing only for random Facebook chats, e-mails, and status updates. Before long, through late-night exchanges of disembodied text, he begins to stir something tender and silly and maybe even a little bit sexy in Julie's suddenly lonesome soul.

To Julie, the emotionally scrambled members of the Watkins family add up to something that ... well ... doesn't quite add up. Not until she forces a buried secret to the surface, eliciting a dramatic confrontation that threatens to tear the fragile Watkins family apart, does she get her answer.

The Album by Ashley Pullo

This review has been in the making for the last month and a bit. Why? Because I honestly didn't think that I would do this book justice. Or I'd end up using hearts all over this review and that would be it.

The Album is a story told in 5 narratives. It takes place over the span of about 17 years. You have Chloe LeGrange, who is a talented musician searching for a purpose. Natalie LeGrange can only be described as a lovable free-spirit chasing her dreams. Then there's Adam Ford. He's a perceptive attorney longing for a surprise. Zach Parker, the philosophical Marine defending love will break your heart. And Chris Brooks, the charming Texan with perpetual bad timing, will make you genially smile.

The story of these 5 characters is intricately intertwined with sometimes such subtle details that you'll have to read every word with fear of missing the crucial piece that makes the puzzle whole. This is not your typical NA but there's some seriously hot bow-chick-wow-wow. It's not a tragedy but I promise you that you will be crying as your heart is getting fractured. It's not a comedy but you will be in stitches when the timing is just right.

The message of this book can be a lot of different things to all the different readers who I desperately pray will give this story and this author a chance. But for me, it's a story of longing for something that's almost unattainable. There is something very comforting about the writing, the connection I feel to the characters, and that underlying hope that everyone has a place that they belong. It's like being away for a very long time, and finally coming home.

Feature & Review: You Were Mine by Abbi Glines

Gossip is the ultimate currency in Rosemary Beach, but Bethy and Tripp have managed to keep one big secret to themselves.

Eight years ago, Tripp Newark was dating a rich girl he didn’t like and was on his way to Yale—and a future he didn’t want. The only way he could escape his predictable life would be to give up the money and power that came with his family’s name. And that’s exactly what he planned to do. At the end of the summer, he was going to ride off on his Harley and never look back.

That was before he met Beth Lowry.

It was only supposed to be a summer fling. She was a sixteen-year-old trailer-park girl who served drinks to his friends at Kerrington Country Club. They didn’t run in the same social circles. No one even knew they were friends, let alone lovers. Yet, for one summer, Bethy became his entire world.

But he couldn’t give up on his plan. He needed to leave Rosemary Beach, but he vowed he would come back for her.

Problem was, by the time he came back—years later than promised—it was too late. His cousin, Jace, had already claimed the woman he loved. . . .

MY REVIEW

This was the time for Bethy and Tripp. Their story couldn't have been written after Rush and Blaire. If it would have come before Grant and Woods, I would have seriously disliked it and would have been disappointed. But the author chose the perfect time for Bethy and Tripp to get their moment in the Rosemary Beach sun.

Though it has taken many, many books, I think the development of Bethy's character is one of the best I've read in a very long time. First time I was 'introduced' to her, she was a confident, outgoing, carefree girl looking for a good time. Throughout this series, she's come to learn her worth, but has also had to deal with major heartbreak that couldn't have been resolved in three chapters. I think that Bethy really needed to fall to the pits of her personal hell and in some ways become the pariah in her circle of friends and acquaintances in order to discover what she's really made of.

I know this is a story about who Bethy and Tripp were, and the people that they've become, but for me, it was all about Bethy. I went from appreciating her for being a friend to Blaire, to admiring her for not willing to settle for being a piece on the side, to feeling nothing but pity when she decided to go for that fateful swim that changed everything, to being her cheerleader when she finally got her groove back.

I'm a huge fan of Abbi Glines, and this story was by far one of her best. I'll say this as I'm running for cover from the inevitable rocks that might be thrown but... I think You Were Mine is better than anything Rush and Blaire can dish out (running to a safe hiding place)!

EXCERPT

“Excuse me.”

My thoughts were elsewhere when I heard a man’s voice and then looked up from the dustpan to see him standing at my classroom door. His voice was strong and captivating, much like the rest of him.

“Can I help you?” I asked, and we locked eyes. His smile made me catch my breath.

“Sorry to interrupt. I would like to make a donation to the school.”

I brushed some loose hairs out of my eyes. “How are you with a broom?”

“Horrible.” He looked around. “But I’m a great storyteller.”

He was older than me, late thirties maybe, with rugged good looks. I guessed it’d been at least two days since he shaved. But he was tall and strikingly handsome, and his comment piqued my interest.

“Maybe you’d like to come to one of my classes and share your stories.”

He cocked his head and rubbed the back of his neck, then nodded. “Okay, you’re on.”

My face lit up. “Really? I didn’t think you’d actually say yes.”

“Then why’d you ask?” I let out a small laugh.

“I would love to.” He took a couple steps closer. “You look familiar,” he said with a knowing glance.

“I do?”

“Yes.” He crossed his arms. “I just said you did.”

I shrugged and then leaned the broom against the desk and extended my hand. “I’m Jessica. I’m a teacher here, and also the assistant director.”

He shook my hand, and I felt it in my heart.

“Grant Flynn. Nice to meet you, Jessica. You’re American?”

“I sure am. Sounds like you are as well.”

He nodded. “How long have you been in Thailand?”

“About four months.”

“Have you been with the school the whole time?” he asked.

“I have. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

He crossed his arms again and studied me. “I see,” he said, not taking his eyes off of me. “Are you the right person to talk to about making a donation? I’d like to leave a check if that’s all right.”

“Of course, yes.”

He grabbed his checkbook from his front pocket and pulled a pen from behind his ear. His presence put my nerves on high alert, and the irony that I was behaving like a giddy schoolgirl was not lost on me either.

“Thank you, Mr. Flynn. This is very kind of you.”

Many visitors to Phuket would come by the local schools and leave donations. It was sort of a ritual for some, a way to leave their mark, a gesture of kindness for many boaters to visit the schools and bring supplies or leave a small contribution of a hundred dollars or so.

“Please call me Grant,” he said as he wrote.

I stood behind him dusting myself off when Sophie walked in.

“Hey, mate, what are you doing here?” she asked.

Both Grant and I looked at her, but he answered. “Told you I was going to come by this week.”

“Right. You met my girl, Jess, did ya?”

He turned to me. “I did. She was helping me decide whether my donation should be manual labor or monetary, but I’m going to stick with my original plan.”

He tore the check out and handed it to me.

“You two know each other?” I asked.

“Grant’s been coming in to The Islander all week,” she said.

He pointed at me. “That’s where I know you from.”

I nodded. “Thank you,” I said, taking the check from him. “I’ll see that our director gets this today, and I look forward to hearing your stories.”

I glanced down and nearly gasped when I saw the check was for five thousand dollars.

“I appreciate it.” He touched my shoulder. “See you later,” he said to Sophie, then waved his hand over his head and walked out, allowing me to breathe freely once again.

Sophie and I went to the window and watched as he got into his rental car.

“You know him from the bar?” I asked.

“He and his mate have been coming in every night. I’m surprised you haven’t seen them. They’re docked at the marina, both Americans.”

“Niran had me on lunches last week.”

“He’s a charmer, eh?”

I nodded. “And quite generous.”

“How generous?” she asked.

“Five thousand dollars generous.”

“Shit, no,” she said, and whisked the check from my grip. “Skylar’s going to freak. You working tonight?”

“Nope. Not until Saturday.”

“All right then. See you later,” she said, and left.

I picked the broom up and saw the bus arrive, but all

I could think about was Grant Flynn.

When I came to school the next morning there was a package at the front door with my name on it. Inside were two DustBusters and a note that read: These are more my speed. I’ll see you in class tomorrow morning.
Grant

Love, in Spanish by Karina Halle

I quit biting my nails about 6 years ago. My dentist told me I was ruining my teeth. It seems that Karina Halle wants me to have ugly teeth, because for 2 days and 268 pages, I did nothing but gnaw on my previously perfect nails.

I'd love to tell you that this was my only coping mechanism for the record-setting anxiety that Love, in Spanish caused, but it's not.

After mentally begging Mateo not to give up (hope, on Vera, on a relationship with Chloe Ann, you name it), I thought the connection might be stronger if I actually started voicing my pleas. That led to my 5-year old asking who Mateo was, and why I looked scared.

Without going into too much detail, I explained the gist of Love, in English in a way that 5-year old *might* understand. How sometimes, people love who they love, and it can cause all other things in their life to get very messy. But as long as those two people realize that what they have is worth fighting for, then in mommy's book, it all works out (though not always perfectly).

The kid looked very confused by this point, but I continued. Love, in Spanish takes place a year later, and I thought it was important that he understand that even though two people sometimes look like they absolutely belong together, there are things outside of their relationship that seem to almost purposefully try and tear them apart. But you can never EVER give up hope, because the loss of it can destroy you the moment you do. Then he asked if he could go back to watching his show about a platypus that was also a spy.

My reading tastes are all over the place, but there is nothing I love more than an author who can write real, flawed, insecure people, in an honest voice that conveys the brutal reality that sometimes is life. Love, in Spanish is not for the faint of heart who are looking for a Hallmark movie of the week in a book. It has you on edge. It has you hating reality. And it has you never giving up hope, even in the midst of utter despair. Ms. Halle - please don't ever write about rainbows.
