Confess by Colleen Hoover

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a new novel about risking everything for love—and finding your heart somewhere between the truth and lies.

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover that Owen is keeping some major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

MY REVIEW

I must confess that I occasionally wish that the magic that Colleen Hoover waves over simple words, that turn into beautiful stories, would lessen. Why? Because she makes liars out of her die-hard fans who have no choice but to declare Confess the best they've read; their new favourite Colleen Hoover book. Which is exactly what most of us have said about all her previous stories, myself included. So we are liars. We said that the book before was the best (and the one before that, and the one before that...you get the point), and then she gives us  Owen and Auburn. We didn't think she could give us uglier ugly tears, and then she writes the opening to Confess. We said the writing in her last book was at the pinnacle, and then she gives us Auburn to love, Owen to root for, another character to hate, and the desperate need to eliminate one by whatever means necessary.

I think the thing that always seems to catch me off guard is what I'm going to refer to as The Hoover. It's the knowledge that there will come a turning point (the ones that the author is famous for) that will have me sobbing like a baby, but my curiosity for HOW she'll shatter me yet again never lives up to the actual execution. And so was the case with Confess - I thought I had an idea but I was as wrong as putting vanilla yogurt in your coffee when you've run out of milk (sad to say I did do that, and it was very WRONG). The story of Owen and Auburn is laced with love, heartbreak, and fantastical twists that have again reminded me why I absolutely love everything that this author writes.
